Mo and Marina are distance friends who work in pop-culture. As long-time fans of sci-fi, we understand that for 95% of it we are not the target audience. Mo, a fan of the original series, saw Resurrections while trapped in her home office during a fourth government quarantine; Marina watched, completely uninitiated, in the theatre after an invitation from another friend.
It was pure joy. A gift. And it felt like the movie was made just for us.
Writer/Director Lana Wachowski has said that she felt compelled to return to the Matrix and to add this chapter to Neo and Trinity's story as a way of dealing with the grief of losing her parents. In doing so, she honoured themes of love and empowerment in the original films and evolved them for fans old and new. In a world that manipulates feelings as a system of control, the way to break free from that prison is to feel more. To love something. Passionately. That's what's real. That's how you escape the Matrix.
That's how you fly.
But why film tourism?
Visiting a location in the real world allows us to connect to the simulated world of film in a tangible way. We appreciate the work of artisans who used these places as canvases to create the fantastic. Film tourism also makes the emotional connection we feel to a work all the more impactful and creates ties to cities and countries we might not otherwise have visited.

Thank you!
Marina and Mo would like to thank: Lana Wachowski for endless inspiration and for creating an incredible film. Heather McLean, a location manager for The Matrix Resurrections, who put up with detailed questions about the "L-shaped building" and helped immeasurably with locations and details. Manijeh Fata, acting executive director of the San Francisco Film Commission, for providing incredible same-day help. Kathy Fang, Chef at House of Nanking, for honouring a special request and creating beautiful food. The endlessly patient staff at Joe & the Juice San Francisco, and everyone who so generously contributed to the Behind the Scenes page.
